If you are having a hard time coping, or things just don’t feel quite right. I may be able to help. My name is Elvan Kahraman and I am a psychologist currently based in the Netherlands. I offer therapy to clients of all backgrounds (e.g., students, expats, immigrants) who feel more comfortable expressing themselves in English.
I offer help primarily in the following areas:

I am originally from Australia and currently live in the Netherlands. My appreciation for the ‘international experience’ comes from personal and professional experience. I was raised in two distinct cultures as a child, and later introduced to a third culture through relocation as an adult. Through research, travel and living abroad, I have come to appreciate the challenges we can face in a new environment. I understand that such a change can surface or exacerbate various struggles which were previously dormant. I also understand the impact that these experiences can have on our personal identities and adjustment to new environments. Importantly, I believe that these struggles can be alleviated with some insight about ourselves and learning new skills.
I value a genuine connection, open feedback, and respect for a client and their autonomy. While a major goal is to alleviate a client’s struggles, it is also to empower clients to walk away with the knowledge and tools to be able to help themselves where possible. This works by getting to know you, what you are having difficulties with, and what you would like to improve. I guide clients to achieve a clearer and more helpful self-awareness. By identifying certain patterns, we can make small modifications to engage more effectively with ourselves, others and the environment. I draw from various techniques with a leaning toward cognitive behavioral therapy and client-centered approaches.
How it works
The first step is to schedule an intake session. We will post or email to you an application form and privacy declaration to bring with you on your first visit. You will also need to bring a passport/Identity card, health Insurance card or number, and a referral letter from your GP. A referral is necessary in order to declare expenses from your health insurance provider.
Weekdays with the option of evening sessions. E-Health and online sessions are available by appointment.

Fees, payment and insurance coverage
A psychological consultation is 92.50 euro per hour for treatments that are not reimbursed by health insurance. Psychological assistance for relationship problems, adjustment problems or work-related problems are not reimbursed by health insurance. This exclusion is determined by the Dutch Ministry of Health. Please notify us 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel an appointment. If you cancel on the same day, half of the fee may be charged.
We are affiliated with almost all health insurance companies, with the exception of Menzis (and the associates). If you are insured through Menzis, we will send the bill directly to you. You must pay the invoice yourself, and can later declare the bill from Menzis. The extent to which the invoiced amount for the consultation and services will be reimbursed by your insurance company will depend on your coverage. We recommend that you consult your health insurance company regarding therapy refunds in advance. With all other insurers, we will take care of this for you by directly billing the insurance company and you will receive a 90-100% reimbursement. To be reimbursed for the costs of psychological assistance you need a referral letter from a GP.
We will determine which treatment trajectory you need: short, medium or intensive (see table below for a description and rates). This depends on the severity of your symptoms. Together, we will draw up a treatment plan. The treatment plan consists of the treatment goals, treatment method and expected duration of treatment. The cost of a treatment trajectory is determined by the Dutch ministry of Health (VWS). Please note: the entire treatment process will be charged. This does not only include direct activities (i.e., face-to-face contact) but also indirect activities (e.g., administration, consultation with GPs and others, reporting, etc.). If treatment is ended earlier, the rate pertaining to the relevant trajectory will be declared to the insurance company. The invoice to the insurance policy states the treatment trajectory, the time spent and your personal details. If you do not wish to give permission for this, you can request an exemption from your insurance company (in consultation with the care provider).

As we are a part of primary mental healthcare (BGGZ), the Personal Data Protection Act, along with the Medical Treatment Contract (WGBO; Wet op de geneeskundige behandelingsovereenkomst), define the regulations for how we handle personal data. The Data Protection Act is the Dutch elaboration of the European Data Protection Directive (95/46/EG). For general information about the Data Protection Act, visit the website. All personal information obtained will be used in accordance with the Data Protection Act. Where your personal data is used it is also stated for what purposes. Your personal information will only be used for the purpose for which you issued them. According to the WGBO you have the right to access your file, or have it destroyed. In accordance with the Medical Treatment Contract (WGBO), we store client information for fifteen years after treatment is completed. Thereafter, all personal information will be erased.
We truly regret if you are dissatisfied with the quality of our service. If you are not satisfied, have a question or have a complaint, the practitioner is the first point of contact. In such an instance, please feel free to let the practitioner know of your concerns directly. If you cannot resolve this together, you may consider submitting a complaint to the professional association to which we are affiliated (e.g., NIP) or to the disciplinary court for healthcare.
